Dr. Kathy Seifert - Violence Expert

Violence in society is prevalent, but more disturbing is the increase in the number of children as perpetrators and victims of violent crimes.

Dr. Kathy Seifert works to stop the cycle of violence. She has dedicated her practice to the prediction and prevention of violence in youth and family. Assisting parents, educators, social workers, criminal justice workers and others who care for and work with children, she helps them to understand:

  • how to recognize the seven warning signs of a violent personality
  • prevent youth violence
  • understand the causes and prevention of teen suicide
  • school based mental health services
  • and much more

The most important fundamental I want people to understand is that violence is preventable. People need to educate themselves. If you're not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.{{{2}}}

Dr. Kathy has five mental health clinics that employ 68 people. Testing, assessment, interventions, group, family, and individual therapy and expert witness testimony are carried out in these clinics. There is a prevention program called Healthy Families and a research/consultation program, as well. http://espsmd.com

Testimonials

The Key Is Maternal Attachment, April 19, 2009

By Nancy Hartevelt Kobrin
Dr. Seifert has written one of the most important books for our time because she has made the critical issue of violence in children and adults understandable as to its origins. We must grapple with how to intervene much earlier on and we can no longer adhere to strict artificial categories such as political violence of terrorism vs. criminal violence of 'routine' homicide and/or domestic violence. Moreover as autism rates have skyrocketed we must realize that a segment of this population will become violent.

Dr. Seifert sketches out this difficult terrain in great detail and shows the impact of violence, genetics and bioneurological chemistry on the child's development set in the first relationship in life - the mother infant dyad.

I have read many books and articles on this subject as a psychoanalyst. I found hers to be unique and special because of her ability to demonstrate the universality of human predatory behavior. She is to be congratulated and I look forward to reading more of her work.

This is a book that should be required reading for counter terrorist experts and the military as well as law enforcement and for sure all those involved in the education of children and concerned citizens. Indeed it is a global work for our globally troubled times.

Most aggressive children, if not all, have been exposed to violence at home or in the community. The more severe, negative events in a child's life, the higher the risk that he/she will react with violence. These kids need intervention. Suspension from school is not the answer. They need treatment. Sending them to residential centers where they’re removed from home is not what they need. We need to be treating them with the family. Otherwise a child comes back to the same situation, the same problem. Violence is preventable. Everyone can do something. We are the most violent of the industrialized nations. Something is wrong. We have a wonderful country, but we're building more prisons. Prisons, in and of themselves, don't work. We need to give them treatment and give it to them early or give it to them while they are in jail. We need to make an effort. The earlier treatment, the better the chances of preventing violence and aggressive behavior. Adults who have been violent are more difficult to treat and more complicated. Intervention takes a lot of effort. But everybody can change. It's just making sure everyone has the skill set.
