Detached Drug Project

Description

The Detached Drug Project is a small youth organisation based in the voluntary sector working in the Borough of Richmond Upon Thames. We work in several areas; We do detached street work around the borough in the evenings, deliver drug education workshops within schools, work within the statutory Youth Service, provide support for schools with ‘at risk’ pupils, one to one interventions for young people with an identified substance use problem and deliver training for professionals.

The project believes that drug use may be part of the experimentation that some young people do when passing from adolescence to adulthood. Taking drugs is not necessarily deviant behaviour and the project draws a distinction between drug use and problematic drug use. We aim to raise awareness about the effects of drugs and the safer use of drugs by working informally and confidentially with young people.

We work from a philosophy of harm reduction, acknowledging that the only way to avoid all problems with drugs is to avoid drugs, but if a choice is made to use drugs there are steps that can be taken to reduce harm.
