History

Though the company was incorporated in the year 1903, the history of DTE Edison dates back to 1886. From 1886, the company was supplying alternating current (AC) electricity for incandescent lighting to homes and offices at some parts of the Detroit city under the name Edison Illuminating Company of Detroit. In 1903, these companies came together to form Detroit Edison. The other company called Peninsular Electric Light Company was incorporated in 1891 and was operating the city's streetlights. These two were the major predecessor of DTE Energy and later companies like Brush Electric Light Company, Fort Wayne Electric Company, Commercial Electric Light Company, and Detroit Electric Light and Power Company were acquired. In 1903, a group of leaders purchased all the securities of Edison Illuminating and Peninsular Electric. Eventually, they organized all these companies under the name of Detroit Edison, which was incorporated in the state of New York. In a matter of three years, the company could produce about 15, 000 kW electricity through its power plants. Before 1917, DTE had three additional units that could produce 20,000 kW each. The company involved itself in the formation of Enrico Fermi Atomic Power Plant in the year 1963. This was owned and operated by 34 companies known as the Power Reactor Development Company (PRDC) of which DTE Energy was one of the principal members. After the decommissioning of this plant due to damage, the commercial operation of Fermi 2 began in 1988 with a generation capacity of 1.1 million kilowatts.

Non-Utility Businesses

The company is the largest marketer and transporter of coal to third-party customers in North America being one of the leading owners of gas storage and pipelines nationwide. The company’s services provide private, utility-like services for a group of select energy-intensive industries. The various services of the company in this regard are on-site energy projects, industrial scale generation/cogeneration and biomass projects. DTE Energy Trading markets coal and emission credits, electric power and natural gas.
