dtr is a national provider of household goods and appliances to both business and domestic customers in New Zealand. It is the only national rental company in New Zealand.
dtr has been operating for over 40 years. It was started as Dominion Television Rentals by Stan Pemberton in Howick, renting out black and white television in the late 1960's. It was bought out by Thorn in 1969. By 1973 Dominion Television Rentals had around 13,000 customers renting black and white TV's. Colour TV was introduced late 1973, beginning of 1974 and this led to another surge in the renting of TV's.
In the early days the cost of televisions were high and there was an increased incidence of failure, so renting was considered a smart option. Video recorders were brought on board in the late 70's. Again the initial introduction of technology meant huge cost of owning a VCR so rental was a good option. The momentum continued with audio systems brought on in 1988, whitegoods in the early 90's and furniture in 1994.
