Although Duke University was first established in 1838 as Brown School it got its present name in 1924 after James B. Duke founded Duke Endowment. The university saw many changes in its name. After Brown School it was named Union Institute in 1841, again renamed as Normal College in 1851, it was subsequently renamed to Trinity College in 1859 before being finally named Duke University in 1924. The university is located in Durham, North Carolina, USA. The university has two undergraduate schools and eight graduate schools. The university is private and coeducational with a huge campus area of 8,709 acres.

Some of the notable alumni of the Duke University are 37th president of the United States Richard Nixon, Senator and former President of the Red Cross Elizabeth Dole, 33rd president of Chile Ricardo Lagos. The Nobel Prize winners list includes Hans Dehmelt, Robert Richardson and Charles Townes in the field of Science. Several present day entrepreneurs belong to Duke’s Alumni which includes presidents and vice presidents of many Fortune 500 companies. Some of them are John A. Allison IV of BB&T Corporation, Peter Nicholas of Boston Scientific, John Chambers of Cisco Systems, Rex Adams of Exxon Mobil, Rick Wagoner of GM Corporation and many more.

Reputation

The university has a great reputation within the United States and also all over the world for its excellent faculty, unmatched programs and state of the art research facilities. The university is ranked eighth in the country for the year 2007 according to U.S. News. Duke was also ranked 13th among the best universities of the world in 2006 by The Times Higher Education Supplement. The Duke’s medical school is ranked 6th by U.S. News in 2007, while its business school ranked 11th and Engineering College got a rank of 30.

Student Body

Number of undergraduate student enrollment is about 7,194. Number of graduate students is about 5,710. The university has a large number of international students also. The undergraduate programs have 37% minority population who come from fifty states of the country and about eighty five countries. 1% are American Indian/Alaskan, 12% Asian, 10% Black/Non-Hispanic and 4% Hispanic/Latino. Total number of faculty members is about 2500. The countries represented are Bahrain, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Egypt, France, Germany, Great Britain (UK), Greece, Honduras, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Korea (Republic of), Kuwait Malaysia Morocco, New Zealand, Panama, Philippines, Poland, Russian Federation, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.

Student Life

For those who are interested in living on campus the university has a big campus hall with a capacity to accommodate approximately 5,593 students with availability of meal service. The students have a choice of 21 meals per week to select from. Types of residences include sorority houses, housing for married students, coed residence halls, women’s residence halls, and fraternity houses. Number of registered organizations is 400; Number of social fraternities is 22 and Number of social sororities’ is13. The university has a lively campus with many on-campus activities which include academic clubs, television station, theatre/drama, choir, concert band, newspaper, orchestra, religious activities, sports, minority cultural activities and much more.

Press

The university has a press covering many areas of study. The university press publishes approximately 120 books annually, putting it among the twenty largest American university presses and more than 30 journals which is the fifth largest. The press concentrates more on humanities and social sciences and up to certain extent law and medicine. One of the best publications that come out of the university press is in the area of theory and history of cultural production. The press caters to three types of readers which include readers who buy them from stores, students who use them as reference with university courses and readers in academic and public libraries.
