Sister Communities of San Ramón, Nicaragua
Description edit
Mission statement
We seek to strengthen our partnership of awareness, friendship, and cooperation between San Ramón, Nicaragua and partner communities in the USA through people-to-people exchanges and through social and economic development projects which support justice and our belief in an interdependent, one-world family.
"It is hard and rewarding work to create solidarity between communities. It inspires us to work with more energy for the advancement and progress of each neighborhood of San Ramón. -- Nelson Artola, former mayor of San Ramón

The municipality of San Ramón, located 90 miles north east of Managua in the Matagalpa region, is a mountainous area (view map). Of the 30,000 inhabitants, 26,000 live in remote hamlets. The others live in the town which includes a health clinic, library, school, and municipal offices. The people live largely by cultivating cash crops such as coffee, corn, and beans; by raising cattle; and by practicing subsistence agriculture. Unemployment and malnutrition are widespread. Only 20% of school-aged children attend school.
