Dynamo Swim Club

Description

Dynamo Swim Club has recently invested in two new technologies, active solar heating systems and evaporative pool energy blankets, which have proven to be wise environmental and economic decisions. Not merely a trendy ecological experiment, this project has proven to make real "solar sense." These are innovative alternative energy resources and clean technologies. Solar radiation is harnessed to effectively, efficiently, and economically provide heated water, which is then circulated and "stored" in our pools. Pool blankets cover the water surface whenever possible to prevent evaporation, the source of most heat loss. Indoor swimming pools must be maintained daily and continuously year round at very precise temperatures depending on different activities.

Three years ago, Dynamo became concerned about rising natural gas utility heating costs and decided to explore new methods of tackling this thermal monster. The project team discovered that the basics of solar are free fuel and no pollution. We could cover the roofs of the Chamblee and Alpharetta facilities with banks of solar panels, creating active (automated sensors, pumps, valves) solar pool water heating systems that would reliably generate about 1/3 of our total hot water needs for free. Solar technology has evolved to become more than twice as efficient today as it was only 15 years ago. The other half of the project involved fitting all water surfaces with pool blankets for evaporation control. Indoor pools lose 70% of heat to evaporation, blankets prevent roughly 60% of evaporative heat loss when covered. With gas and solar systems automatically controlled and blankets to retain heat longer, we have even reduced total BTU demand/consumption.

We call this hybrid hot water, a standard gas pool heater working in combination with a supplemental solar system. The solar system is designed to receive priority in supplying hot water to the pools. But when the sun does not radiate sufficiently, the gas heater takes over to maintain consistent target temperatures. Depending on conditions, solar water temperatures can exceed 180 degrees F. on the roof. During warmer/sunnier months, typically from May through September in Atlanta, the solar method has proven to provide 100% of our pool water heating requirements. Each pool operates on its own closed loop recirculation system to meet health codes. Because we simply ran out of roof space for additional solar panels, all bathrooms and showers are not solar sourced.
