You know…it's late, and they’re all working really hard, but they believe in what they’re doing, so they’re really into it? And at midnight they realize they missed dinner and send out for pizza? And sometime before sunrise they’re high-fiving each other because they’ve done a good job?

The eGO electric scooter, conceived in a funky Alabama garage, achieved a global following. But it's only a memory now in its old home place of Fairhope, AL.
How does a great idea get born? How does that idea take shape as a daring machine? How does that machine invented in Alabama wind up on an assembly line in Taiwan, its limitless future being charted by bosses in Tennessee?
Mobile Register business writer George Talbot set out to answer these questions in a months-long, 3,000-mile reporting effort that took him from Alabama to New England and on to the other side of the world.
As Talbot learned, the eGO's tale was as much about the world economy of 2003 - where ideas are prized above all - as it was about two inventors left rueful and with only paper stock to show for a beautiful eGO baby drawing raves on the "Today" show.
Talbot's series won first place in the business writing category of the "Green Eyeshade Excellence in Journalism" competition recognizing outstanding Southern journalism in 2003.
