Kos lies in the Southeast portion of the Aegean Sea and is the third largest island in the cluster of islands known as the Dodecanese. It is 290 square kilometres, has a population of approximately 25,000 and is 219 miles from the port of Athens.
Kos is divided into three municipalities: the Municipality of Kos (the largest and at the capital of the island), the Municipality of Heraklides, and the Municipality of Dikeos. According to archaeological finds, Kos island was first inhabited during the early period of the Bronze Age (2800-2000 B.C.) by the Pelasgians.
