The people of Essex County are linked by a vast network of non-profit organizations dedicated to serving the needs of the community -- 1,500 organizations hard at work all around us every day. They are feeding our hungry neighbors and caring for the sick and elderly. They are protecting our wetlands, fighting to keep kids off drugs, counseling the abused, and helping to enrich all our lives through the arts and humanities. They must be funded.
Like all businesses, nonprofit organizations must also maintain records, file quarterly reports, plan budgets, pay rent, withhold payroll taxes, etc., often with volunteer labor. And because individual and institutions donors are virtually their only source of income, they have to raise money by " marketing" themselves to funding organizations and the general public, often competing with each other for limited funds.
We think the nonprofit organizations of Essex County need, and deserve, better support from their community. One highly effective way to accomplish this is through a Community Foundation.
