Based in Rosemead, California Edison International was founded in the year 1886 by the name Holt & Knupps. They were primarily a provider of street lights then. Edison is now the leading provider of electricity in Southern California.

The following are important milestones in the history of the company.

1887 – California's 1st hydroelectric plant begins operation at Highgrove.
1894 – Formation of Los Angeles Edison Electric Company.
1897 – West Side Lighting Company merges with the Los Angeles Edison Electric Company to form The Edison Electric Company of Los Angeles.
1899 – Edison's Santa Ana River No. 1 hydroelectric plant begins operation, transmitting power to Los Angeles over the world's longest power line (83 miles).
1907 – Edison's Kern River-Los Angeles Transmission Line begins operation. At 118 miles and 75 kV, once again the world's longest and highest voltage power line and the first line in the nation to be entirely supported on steel towers.
1909 – Renamed to Southern California Edison Company (SCE).
1963 – California Electric Power Company which served 450,000 customers over a 41,500-square-mile area merges with SCE.
1971 – SCE completes and occupies the Corporate Office building in Rosemead, California.
1980 – SCE becomes the 1st electric company to make a large-scale commitment to the development of renewable and alternate energy resources.
1987 – SCE founded a predecessor to subsidiary Edison Capital.
1988 – The company creates a parent holding company for the electric utility subsidiary, SCE, and the non-utility subsidiaries.
1992 – Edison Mission Energy goes global with its investment in the Roosecote Project in U.K.
1996 – The company gets its new name Edison International
1998 – California's electric utility industry changes to an open marketplace thus changing the way SCE and the state's other investor-owned utilities do business.
1999 – Edison International's Edison Mission Energy significantly grows its portfolio of generating assets through its acquisitions of the Homer City Generating Station in Pennsylvania, 12 generating plants in Illinois, and 2 generating plants in the U.K.
2000 – Edison Capital invests in the telecommunications duct network of Swisscom, Switzerland's main provider of telecommunications services.
2002 –Edison International receives the Champion of Energy Efficiency award.
2003 – Midwest Generation's Powerton Station, subsidiary of Edison Mission Group (EMG), sets a new annual power-production record—964,579 net-megawatt hours, breaking a previous record set more than 7 years ago.
2004 – Takes initiative against greenhouse gas emissions.
2005 – Begins operations at its new Mountainview plant, the 1st new major power plant in the Los Angeles Basin in 30 years.
2006 – The company signs the largest wind energy contract ever completed by a U.S. utility company on Dec. 21, 2006
2007 – SCE continues to operate the nation’s largest private fleet of EVs. SCE is working to add more than 200 MW of energy to its portfolio.

They generate and distribute electric power and invest in infrastructure and renewable energy projects. The company has a portfolio of 14,000 megawatts. The company is basically divided into two groups, which manages its power generation and distribution facilities in the United States and other countries.

1. Southern California Edison

Southern California Edison (SCE) is one of the nation’s largest investor-owned electric utilities, serving more than thirteen million people in a 50,000 square-mile area of central, coastal and Southern California, excluding the City of Los Angeles and certain other cities. Based in Rosemead, California, the utility has been providing electric service in the region for 120 years. The SCE service territory includes approximately 430 cities and communities. As of June 30, 2006, SCE had consolidated assets of approximately $25.3 billion. As of September 30, 2006, SCE had approximately 15,000 employees.

    • Big Creek Hydro Facilities, Shaver Lake, California - Power Generation Capacity is 1,000 megawatt. The fuel is hydro.
    • Four Corners Generating Station, Fruitland, New Mexico - Power Generation Capacity is 2,048 megawatt. The plant uses coal as fuel.
    • Mountainview Power Plant, Redlands, California - Power Generation Capacity is 1,054 megawatt. The fuel source is natural gas.
    • Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, Wintersburg, Arizona - Power Generation Capacity is 3,600 megawatt. It is a nuclear power plant.
    • San Onofre Nuclear Generating - Power Generation Capacity is 2,220 megawatt. The source of fuel is nuclear energy.


2. Edison Mission Group

Edison Mission Group also known as EMG manages the power generation business and other unregulated subsidiaries of Edison International. EMG is based in Irvine, California.

    • American Bituminous, Grant Town, West Virginia - Power Generation Capacity is 80 megawatt and the plant uses waste coal as the fuel.
    • Coalinga, Coalinga, California - Power Generation Capacity is 38 megawatt and the fuel used is natural gas.
    • Fisk, Chicago, Illinois - Power Generation Capacity is 326 megawatt. The fuel used is a combination of coal and oil.
    • Homer City, Northeast of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - Power Generation Capacity is 1,884 megawatt and fuel is coal.
    • Joliet, Joliet, Illinois - Power Generation Capacity is 1,334 megawatt and fuel source is coal, natural gas and diesel.
    • Kern River, Oildale, California - Power Generation Capacity is 300 megawatt and type of fuel is natural gas.
    • Lombard, Lombard, Illinois - Power Generation Capacity is 74 megawatt. Fuel source is natural gas and oil.
    • March Point 1 & 2, Anacortes, Washington - Power Generation Capacity is 140 megawatt. The type of fuel is natural gas.
    • Mid-Set, Fellows, California - Power Generation Capacity is 38 megawatt and the fuel used is natural gas.
    • Midway-Sunset, Fellows, California - Power Generation Capacity is 225 megawatt and the fuel source is natural gas.
    • Powerton, Pekin, Illinois - Power Generation Capacity is 1,538 megawatt and the type of fuel being used is coal.
    • Sabrooke, Rockford, Illinois - Power Generation Capacity is 89 megawatt and fuel used is oil.
    • Sargent Canyon, San Ardo, California - Power Generation Capacity is 38 megawatt and fuel source used is natural gas.
    • Sunrise, Fellows, California - Power Generation Capacity is 572 megawatt and fuel used is natural gas and exhaustheat/steam.
    • Sycamore, Oildale, California - Power Generation Capacity is 300 megawatt and fuel source is natural gas.
    • Watson, Carson, California - Power Generation Capacity is 385 megawatt and fuel type is natural gas.
    • Waukegan, Waukegan, Illinois - Power Generation Capacity is 789 megawatt and fuel source is coal and oil.
    • Doga Enerji, Istanbul, Turkey - Power Generation Capacity is 180 megawatt and fuel used is natural gas.
