Being a PHP programer on the side I encounter problems on a regular basis that require either a small investment of money or a large investment of time. I can hand code my own PHP application to do what I want to do or I can find a open source application that I can modify to do what I want, or I can purchase an application already written for the task at hand. Broadening the scope of my experience is one of my daily goals--this desire--dare I say obession to do something new every day keeps me on the cutting edge of technology. For example, were I to host my main sites with a service that creates templates for you and all you do is provide the content I would have missed out on learning a great deal about CSS, dedicated servers, web hosting control panels, PHP, MySQL, HTTP, and TCP. Wow, that's a lot. Americans recently have become overly interested in DIY home repair to the extent that there are almost as many Home Depots and Lowes as there are Wal-Marts. If I can help it I would rather have the new experience rather then shell out the bucks for somebody else to do it. Unless I can't physically handle the task.
