- Elisabeth Philomene Mukadi-Ngandu was born June 30, 1940 at Idiofa, Bandundu Province, in what was then the Belgian Congo. She was born into the Bena Nshimba Tribe of Katanda in the Province of Kasai Orientale. Her father, Oscar Mazamba Mukadi, died when Elisabeth was only two years old. Her mother, Binene Margueritte, was herself barely out of her teens, and was unable to support and care for her, so Elisabeth went to live with her grandmother in the Lower Congo.
