Emerson College

Description edit

Introduction

The work of Emerson College, founded in1962 by the educational pioneer Francis Edmunds (1902 – 1989) is centred in the fields of education, the environment, social and artistic renewal, all drawing inspiration from a common source – anthroposophy and the work of Rudolf Steiner. Students come to the college to renew and inspire their work, their communities and their relationship to the environment. These goals of finding new impulses to take into the world mean that many now working in Steiner Waldorf schools, on biodynamic farms, in social initiatives, as business consultants, counsellors, artist and therapists, first awakened to those tasks at Emerson College.

As human beings we seek wholeness in life, an impulse that comes from within. This meets contemporary life which is urging us to develop new ways of perceiving and new modes of consciousness. These fundamental processes of inner and outer change characterise the beginning of our new century, and are also the guiding principles of the college. We need to develop both discipline and insight to meet these challenges.
