The Empower Program

Description

The Empower Program is a national, nonprofit educational organization founded in 1992 and based in Washington, DC. We empower young people and adults to create safe schools and communities by providing effective prevention strategies to address bullying and other forms of peer aggression. Our services include long and short-term curriculum-based workshops and classes, programming for parents and community groups, youth leadership development as well as public outreach and advocacy.

We believe that violence prevention education must speak directly to young people across the socioeconomic, racial, ethnic, and cultural spectrum, and be sensitive to the needs of all people whether they are victims, perpetrators, or bystanders. Our programs address the root causes of gender-based aggression; foster respect for, and acceptance of, that which is unique in each of us; teach responsibility; and reflect an enduring commitment to eliminate violence as a rite of passage.

The Empower Program recognizes that young people live within a violent culture where gender roles restrict their choices and enforce silence when they or their peers are confronted by behavior ranging from cliques, social isolation, and bullying to sexual violence, harassment and abusive relationships. Empower's visionary, effective and comprehensive approach teaches youth to transform silence into action.
