Welcome to English in Galway

Description

Galway is a fun and attractive small city on the west coast of Ireland. It is located on the sea and has a world famous salmon river running through it. Its population is 65,000 and approximately 10,000 of its inhabitants are students at the local univeristy and technical institute. Galway's social life is vibrant and covers all types of interests and activities. Many exciting festivals are in and around the city throughout the year. To the west of Galway lies Connemara and to the south lies the Burren, an archaeologist's and botanist's paradise.

The city dates from 1484 when it was granted a charter by Richard III of England. The remains of the city walls and the Spanish Arch are located next to our school. Christopher Columbus visited Galway and a statue to commemorate our connection with him was presented to the city of Galway by the people of Genoa. This statue is located in front of our school.

Galway's International Arts Festival takes place in and around the theatres and streets of the city in the middle of July. The festival features theatre, visual arts, literature and music presented by international and local artists. Many of the programmed events are free. The highlight each year is the parade of hundreds of volunteers and performers.
