Title

Ettrickshaws Country House Hotel

Description

On the 14th July 1891, Mr Thomas Scott Anderson purchased 30 acres of land in the parish of Kirkhope from the Duke of Buccleuch, and commenced the building of Ettrickshaws for himself and his family.

Ettrickshaws is a true country house. Nestling in the shelter of Shaws Hill which rises to some 1500 feet, it is surrounded by thousands of acres of spectacular scenery and yet Edinburgh with its city attractions is only some 45 miles away. No major structural changes have been made since the 1920s and although we believe Ettrickshaws first started to trade as a hotel in the late 1940s, happily many of the original features of the house remain intact.

The steel lattice access bridge across the Ettrick Water still stands today and marks the start of the quarter mile drive leading up to the house. Ettrick Water is a typical spate river, and provides the hotel with 2 miles of splendid salmon and trout fishing for guests.
