Thalassaemia Association Malaysia (TAM)
Description
The primary objective of this project is to establish an electronic community (e-community) for the blood disorder, thalassaemia. This e-community is expected to include the sufferers of the disorder, their families, medical personnel, social workers, voluntary workers and the members of the public who are interested in thalassaemia.
The E-Thalassaemia project intends to make its website a portal site for thalassaemic and related activities in the country. Through this E-Thalasaemia community, it is hoped that the patients and their families can have a sense of belonging and feel less alienated. It can also enrich their lives and help them come to terms with the disorder. Unlike physical meetings and contacts (which of course will still go on), an e-community will enable the people involved to be in touch as often as they want and wherever they may be.
There is a general lack of awareness and information on thalassaemia among the people in Malaysia even though this disorder seems to have its niche in South East Asia and the Mediterranean region. This is most unfortunate since it is very important that information about thalassaemia is disseminated to the average Malaysian as anyone can be a thalassaemia carrier and blood-test screening is the only way to detect whether one is a carrier.
