Family Dollar
Family Dollar is a chain of stores with locations all over the United States. Stores of the organization consist of numerous items like clothing, household products and food items. Most of the items in the stores are of $1 while 90 percent of the items are less than $10 in price. Set up of most of the stores is like a supermarket. Transaction of the money takes place in the form of cash and debit cards while credit cards are not accepted. Family Dollar owns more than 6,300 stores in continuous 44 -state area which ranges from northeast to Maine, southeast to Florida, as far northwest as Idaho and southwest to Arizona. Size of store varies from 7,500 to 9,500 square feet and most are run under leases. From the very beginning, all the concern of stores is focused on meeting the demands of customer for good quality, low cost basic merchandise.
History
The first and the foremost Family Dollar store opened in 1959 in Charlotte, NC by Leon Levine. Store that was opened was small and includes self-service operation. Next store was opened in South Carolina and soon a number of stores were opened in Georgia and Virginia. Year 1969 saw opening of 50 new stores in Charlotte.
Stores became public in 1970 with the cost of $14.50 per share. A distribution centre was opened in 1974. In 1982 approximately 500 stores were opened which increased up to 700 in number in the year 1983. Nearly 1500 stores were operating by the year 1989. Year 2000 proved to be of a significant growth as 3500 new stores were added to the chain. Family Dollar joined S&P 500 stock market index in the year 2001. In 2002 company joined the Fortune 500 list of largest publicly held companies. With the retirement of Leon Levine in 2003, his son became the CEO and Chairman of the Dollar Company. Company operated nearly 6300 stores in 44 states by the beginning of year 2007.
Online Shopping
Online shopping is provided by a number of retailers but for the dollar chain online shopping does not fit in its brand name as most of the products of the company are of price $1 or less than $10, so the cost of shipping and handling related with online purchases could double the cost of products. Thus stores aim to provide products to its customers at nearly located stores rather than going online. The Family Dollar Transportation Department consists of Domestic Transportation and Imports, with includes allies working at the Corporal Headquarters and nine Distribution Centers.
In Domestic Inbound Transportation the company utilizes a system named Transportation Management System (TMS). Vendors order the products electronically and release items based on purchase and ship windows. By using TMS, bundling of shipments, or optimization, is performed and are sent to carriers and the Company's private fleet. Tendering, tracking and tracing are done centrally at the Corporate Offices.
Family Dollar currently utilizes the services of several top transportation companies throughout the United States as well as by the private fleet of the company. Dedicated fleets provide Family Dollar a low cost medium to provide services to the around 6,000 stores located in 44 states. Family Dollar Trucking, Inc. is a private fleet with "for-hire" authority, is an indirect subsidiary of Family Dollar, Inc.
