- Over the past number of years, the developed world has seen a large exodus from the land. This has occurred in the United States, Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. There has been a consequent decline in the number of people remaining on the land or taking up a career in agriculture, creating a vacuum in the agricultural sector. Some farms are too small and no longer viable, while other properties are too large so that a shortage of labour has meant that they are no longer manageable. In some countries, this has been detrimental to the social fabric of rural towns and communities, with the termination of services and the closure of schools, shops and businesses.
