- In 1969, in the then rural community of Chesterfield, Missouri, Benjamin Houlihan Jr. began life as a fence man. Ben was 15 when his Boy Scout leader asked him to work on his farm building fences, pole-barns and a small bridge to an island in the middle of a lake. His leader told him he could get his P.H.D. in fencing! He told him how the law of gravity will always point you plumb to the geometric earth with a high tech tool. With a post-hole-digger and a rock tied to a string for a plumb-bob, Ben began installing fencing for cattle and hogs in St. Charles County.
