- Since 1997, Flint Hills Resources has reduced by 95 percent the amount of time the Pine Bend Refinery and the Texas West Plant used a flare to eliminate unused hydrocarbons. This efforts has resulted in an emissions reduction of about 800 tons annually. The U.S. Environment Protection Agency recognized this achievement with a Clean Air Award - one of only 13 projects in 2004. Building on that success, the company and EPA are cooperating to establish best practices that will reduce emissions during periods of startup, shutdown and malfunction. EPA and Flint Hills Resources believe implementing these practices will result in further emissions reduction at Flint Hills Resources facilities and throughout the industry.
