The history of First Bank & Trust closely follows the history of the Fishback family, a pioneer banking family. Horace Fishback Sr. and his uncle, Bert Olds, opened a general store in Brookings in 1880. Fishback saw a need for banking services and set up a check cashing station at a back counter of the store and there began his banking business. With the exception of a few years in the early 1900s, the Fishback family has always been active in banking in Brookings.
The present First Bank & Trust celebrated its opening on November 2, 1925. Security National Bank, as it was then known, opened its doors during an extremely difficult time for business in South Dakota. Three Brookings banks had failed and a fourth bank failure was imminent. The local paper reported, “The new bank starts off with the brightest of prospects for a splendid business career, with the confidence of the entire community and the realization that it is filling a real need in Brookings.”
Those words ring as true today as they did in 1925. In today’s world of bank mergers and acquisitions, decisions are often made in far removed board rooms. At First Bank & Trust we remain a family-owned, community bank. We pride ourselves in meeting the needs of our customers with the same commitment to service as when we first began in 1925.
