Despite the fact that goosefish is currently the highest dollar-value finfish in the commercial sector of the Mid-Atlantic and New England states, many important questions about goosefish biology are currently unanswered. The high value of goosefish landings enjoyed by the fishery coupled with the changing regulatory landscape have been instrumental in prompting the need to identify and address key questions.
The Monkfish Defense Fund ("MDF") continues its work to avoid the imposition of year four "default" measures that would shut down the remaining fishery (May 1, 2002) and to develop scientific understanding regarding the status and resiliency of monkfish stocks that would permit fishing above the current unjustly and unreasonably low trip limits.
Fishermen and Scientists Join Forces to Study Monkfish
Woods Hole, Mass. -- Commercial fishermen and government scientists last week conducted a six-day collaborative survey for monkfish on the edge of the continental shelf. The deep-water survey aboard F/V Warrior was designed to study the feasibility of using commercial vessels to gather data that could improve monkfish stock assessments.
