At the three Environmental Assessment Office public comment sessions in Fernie, Sparwood and Elko, not a single British Columbian spoke in favour of Cline Mining's scheme to undertake mountain-top removal coal mining in the headwaters of the Flathead River. The unity of anti-Cline sentiment is remarkable for communities traditionally dependent on coal mining for their prosperity. The integrity and authenticity of B.C.'s environmental assessment process was challenged by several participants, particulary after the meeting chairman started the comment period with an unconcealed attempt to limit the remarks of known mine opponents.
