Fermilab's founder, Robert Wilson, created "an architecturally significant center, a place to which physicists will be attracted by the physical beauty as well as by the beautiful facilities for research in particle physics."
The Department of Energy, through its Office of Science, supports more than 90 percent of the federally funded research in high-energy physics in the United States. Fermilab is a DOE national laboratory.
