Title edit
The Federation of German-American Societies of Greater Cleveland
Description edit
The founding of the first German Society in Cleveland came in the 1830's with a substantial emigration of Germans into the area. As the need for social, political and cultural organizations increased, hundreds of German clubs and societies for mutual aid, insurance and business purposes were formed. Sports, sick benefits societies, etc. all became parts of the German-American scene.
Through the years many changes took place and those organizations that still remain have grouped to become the Federation of German-American Societies of Greater Cleveland (known as Der Deutsche Stadtverband). This present roof organization for our local German-American clubs and societies has four major functions:
To sponsor the annual German Day celebration commemorating the arrival of the first organized German settlement in America in 1683 and to be ever mindful of the many great contributions the Germans have made in culture and education, as well as the great technology they have brought to our shores.
