Additional Information

The Mugangu Foundation (FONDAMU), striving for a Sustainable Congo Future, is a not-for-profit charity, which was created on Good Friday, 14 April 2006, and it was registered under number 92-9884 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a non-confessional association. The Mugangu Foundation is to promote peace, economic development, and environmental sustainability by (a) hosting a dialogue on a sustainable future for Congo-Kinshasa among the elite, (b) promoting an integrated approach to alleviate poverty through microcredit, support to various livelihood programs such as traditional organic agriculture with manure or mulching, reintroduction of cattle and small farming for village food security, and biodiversity conservation in the Congo Basin, and (c) providing vulnerable war-displaced or returnee people, blind & crippled people, women victims of rape, widows, and orphaned young people with shelter, entrepreneurship skills, and the leadership training they need to fully participate in the construction of a democratic Congo.

FONDAMU approach is to empower local people and communities to become self-reliant and fight poverty by providing training, teaching, and by coaching & supporting their activities. To assist vulnerable people in the post conflict Congo to rise above the poverty threshold, FONDAMU empowers the villagers by providing access to revolving microcredit, so that they can: (a) start up small businesses; (b) access seeds and training in good soils management, which includes opportunities to perform productive agriculture with manure and mulching; and (c) perform various income generating activities. FONDAMU is also integrating orphaned children into foster families in Kinshasa and Ngweshe in Eastern Congo by providing them with shelter, clothing, healthcare and schooling with leadership and entrepreneurship skills. After the training the children and women victims of rape during warfare in the Congo are equipped with a start up capital and tools to create their own small businesses to fend for themselves. FONDAMU is also running environment and biodiversity projects in the Congo for the sustainable use of the rich Congo Forest. FONDAMU is making available two kinds of conservation projects in the lowland and mountain gorilla areas: (1) alternative revenue generating initiatives, and (2) cash or livestock microcredit to support people living around Mount Tshiaberimu, Kahuzi-Biega and Virunga National Parks, which are located in the Kivu. These projects help local people cope with the life around the protected areas and participate in various conservation efforts. The website is at www.fondamu.org
