ACORN Food Dependency Recovery Services Home Page
Description
ACORN Is a group of abstinent and recovering food addicts committed to helping other food addicts. We see ACORN work as a supplement to Twelve Step work in a Fellowship such as Overeaters Anonymous (OA).
In OA (or other groups, such as FAA and OA-HOW) there is not always specific discussion about food, there is no feedback in groups, and leadership rotates and serves as trusted servants. In ACORN, everyone is encouraged to be very specific about their physical abstinence. The priority is to get and stay abstinent. In ACORN groups, there is an agreement to be honest about one's own thinking and feelings and to share them with others. Leaders are experienced facilitators of process group, and will sometimes use their own experience with physical, emotional and spiritual recovery.
In therapy, there is an assumption that the professional knows what clients need or has the expertise in helping clients understand themselves better. In ACORN process groups, everyone is a food addict-including the facilitators of the group. The work of the leader is to help create a community which will support abstinence and recovery. So the primary work is actually being abstinent, and the group deals with identifying and working through blocks to physical, emotional and spiritual recovery.
