Florida Power & Light Company (FPL): Electric Power Utility

The FPL is a group of companies that has operations in electricity generation and telecommunications. Florida Power & Light(FPL) is a subsidiary company that generates, transmits and delivers electric power to more than 4.4 million customers across the US. The FPL Group Capital operates the non utility businesses such as FPL Energy. With the acquisition of the Point Beach Nuclear Plant, the FPL group has diversified into production of nuclear energy.

History of FPL and its standing in the Industry

Founded in 1925, the FPL group was a company formed out of the merger of a number of smaller companies that were supplying power and related services to the localities in Florida. The company grew in size with the growth in the population of the region. It won the Deming prize in 1989 when Dr.Noriaki Kano joined the company as its consultant.

In 2005 FPL group acquired Gexa Energy of Houston for a sum of $81 million. Gexa Energy was a company with US $273 million revenue (2004) and was servicing the energy needs of the State of Texas. During this period the company also considered merging Constellation Energy for US $11 billion, but the merger fell through in 2006.

  • FPL has large interest in Seabrook, St Lucie and the Turkey Point Nuclear Power plants. It also had a 70% stake in Duane Arnold Energy Center which it sold in 2006.
  • In the field of Solar power plants FPL is the co owner of SEGS Solar Power Plant. It owns and is the largest operator of Wind Turbines in the world. It has more than 47 wind farms in 15 states in the US and generates 4,002 megawatts of power from these turbines.
  • Progress Energy, Southern Company and TECO Energy are considered to be the major competitors of the FPL Group.
  • Today the FPL Group has a growing presence in 26 States of the US.

Customer Base

  • The customer base of the company has grown at the compounded annual rate of 2.2 percent and usage per customer has increased at an annual rate of 0.6 percent. The development plans of the company also reflect the growth patterns detected above.
  • The customer base of the company is mixed. About 3% of the customers are industrial customers and 19% customers are users of electric utility industry. It is for this reason that the company is almost unexposed to economic cycles.

Guiding Principles

The guiding principles of the company are enshrined in the code of ethics of the company and the guidelines issued by the company from time to time. The code demands that the officials and employees of the company maintain integrity, honesty and ethical behavior in all walks of life. They must deal with the personnel and the public keeping in mind the code of conduct prescribed for its officers and employees at all times. The company strongly enjoins its officers to be accountable for all their actions both to the company and to the public. Every employee is expected to accept and sign the code of ethics before he joins the company.

FPL group believes that demand for cost effective electric power must be met but not at the cost of the environment in which they operate. All actions and operations of the company must keep in mind that the environment must be preserved, protected and enhanced. The company, like good neighbors must anticipate and understand customer needs, build long term relationships in the neighborhood and the community and be open minded and receptive to new ideas. The company must commit itself and its resources to comply with all environment protection laws and assume stewardship in design, construction, operation and maintenance of its facilities and encourage and educate the public to use energy wisely and efficiently.

Revenues

The FPL Group disclosed a sale figure of US $15,710 Million for the year ended December 2006. This was a 32.6% sales growth over the previous year.
