Title

Fractal Factory

Description

A fractal is defined as "an irregular curve or surface produced by repeated subdivision...Fractals generated on a computer screen are used to construct models for processes such as coastline erosion and crystal growth, and are also used in computer art" (Chambers - Combined Dictionary Thesaurus, 1995)

Put simply, fractals are complex images, generated by computers, which are infinitely large and have an infinite amount of detail. They were 'invented', in a sense, in the 1970s by the mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot who used the simple equation z = z*z + c to create the fractal pictured below.

Fractals are generated on computers using unique mathematical formulae, usually more complicated than that of the Mandelbrot set. While these formulae can produce stunning images, it is usual to apply one or more filters: these manipulate the fractal in some way, for example altering colours. Since fractals are infinite, it is then necessary to 'zoom in' on specific regions of interest.
