- FridayLight is part of an ongoing Shabbat candle lighting campaign initiated in September, 1974 by the Lubavitcher Rebbe. In his words: "With the world so shrouded in darkness and confusion, it is imperative that (women) illuminate it with the holy lights of the Shabbat candles. We recognize and acknowledge the troubling reality of a strife-torn world, but we face it with a steady faith in the power of good to triumph. In the words of our tradition, 'A little light dispels much darkness.'"
