- The smallest of the world’s wild cattle is the anoa that lives on an Indonesia island. It is only about three feet three inches high at the shoulder; another name for it is the “pigmy buffalo.” To most of us, “cattle” denotes the placid cow, but there is nothing placid about this member of the wild cattle family. It has horns twelve to fifteen inches long and it knows how to use them as one American zoological garden learned to its cost. It quartered a newly arrived anoa in a compound next to a highly prized musk ox. Within five minutes, the anoa had dealt the musk ox such vicious jabs through the wire fence that the musk ox died.
