Description

This once-merry band of G-Lab technicians is fighting back tears of disappointment. For weeks, Microsoft had us in a tizzy. We couldn't have been more excited about the top-secret gadget code-named Origami: What is it? What does it do? Does it have built-in Bluetooth? EDGE? GPS? Can we fold it into the shape of a crane? We didn't know anything about it, but we couldn't dream of living without one. And then, the curtain lifted, and what Gates and company gave us was a dinky, craptastic tablet PC. Oh, the heartbreak! Evil marketing overlords, you've gone too far. Don't worry about us ... sniffle ... we'll get over it someday.

This week, we've tried not to cry on a slim voice recorder, Apple's new i(ntel)Mac, and a digital notepad. Drop us a line at gadgetlab@wiredmag.com and let us know what product launches have left you in the dumps.

"Did you say he was anal?" I asked. A suspicious colleague raises an eyebrow and responds, "No, I said he was analytical." To test the sleek, stylish WS series Olympus digicorder, I tried to entrap Wired editors by tricking them into bad-mouthing head honcho Chris Anderson. Snug in my front pants pocket, the built-in mike caught voices without my having to get all up in anyone's business. Its 1 gig of memory can store 277 hours of voice, and, when you get sick of listening to chatter, the 320M can entertain you with MP3s. Plus, it plugs into your PC like a USB drive for easy downloading of your recorded files. This baby gorges on AAA batteries and has a plump price tag, but it's only a matter of time until it pays for itself with hush money.
