- Gallery St. Thomas on Garden Street in Charlotte Amalie, was created by owner Claire Ochoa to promote artwork from or inspired by the Virgin Islands. Claire’s background in the art world began 14 years ago in Texas, at Texas A&M University with Benjamin Knox Gallery. She brought her art experience with her to the Virgin Islands in 1998. From 1999 to 2003 she was a sales associate at Bajo el Sol Gallery in St. John’s Mongoose Junction and an artist’s representative through her business StJohnGallery.com. In September 2003, with the blessings of her friends in St. John, Claire took ownership of Blue Turtle Gallery in St. Thomas from Lucinda Schutt. She renamed the venue Gallery St. Thomas and selected a variety of artists and mediums to create an interesting showcase for local art. Gallery St. Thomas was just recently voted “Best Gallery for Local Art” in the Virgin Islands Daily News readership poll.
