Description

Dedicated in 1875, this cruciform Neo-Gothic edifice is nearly as large as Notre Dame in Paris. The Cathedral contains New England's largest and earliest collection of stained glass.

Friendly people, great restaurants, distinctive architecture, and trendy shops-this is Boston's South End, one of the most vibrant areas in the City of Boston. The South End was originally developed between 1860 and 1900 as a residential area for Boston's new gentry. The streets were laid out in a pleasing grid pattern punctuated by broad main avenues and small parks. After the turn of the century, the South End became a mélange of cultures with a diverse mix of residents. Activity revolved around Boston City; Hospital, the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, and the Cyclorama, now Boston Center for the Arts. Since the 1970's urban professionals have renovated and updated the Victorian residences throughout the South End while maintaining their historical character and charm. Situated in the heart of the South End, 79 Waltham Street Condominiums are part of the vibrant neighborhood known as "Eight Streets." This area is bounded by stately Union Park on the west, the Berkeley Street Community Gardens on the east, the bustling businesses and residences of Tremont Street to the north, and the newly developed Washington Street Gateway Corridor to the south. Nearby Ringold Park was redesigned in 1997, and serves as a quiet oasis. Nearby shops include up-scale furniture, gourmet foods, and creative gift shops. There are restaurants galore in the immediate area such as the national known "Franklin Cafe" and "Hamersley's Bistro". Public transportation is a short walk to the Back Bay Station which is also served by Amtrak.

One block east of Washington Street you will find the historic Warehouse District, between Paul Sullivan and East Concord Streets. Discover artists' lofts among scattered shops and galleries, and don't miss privately-owned Thayer Street with its funky clothing, renovation supplies, and health food shops.
