Description

Excellence - it's a well-known tradition at Gem City College in Quincy, Illinois. Gem City College offers training in four areas of Horology--Watchmaking, Clockmaking, Jewelry and Engraving-- as well as Cosmetology and several home study courses. The college has an ongoing system of instruction that allows new students to begin training each Monday. Projects are arranged so that the knowledge and skill attained in each assignment will be utilized to complete the following assignments. Instructors work with each student individually to assist them to progress, as their diligence, aptitude, and ability will permit.

Gem City College is one of the few institutions in the United States to offer a thorough program of engraving. A machine can never duplicate the fine touch of expert craftsmanship and the skill of hand engraving on precious metals is experiencing a revival. A knowledge of this craft not only leads to real job opportunities, but also prepares the student to be a better jeweler because of the skills in using the graver that are learned.

Learning by doing is a trademark at Gem City College. Working at your own jeweler's bench, you'll receive individual attention and thorough, step-by-step training. The jewelry industry is in need of jewelers with skills in stone-setting, casting, enameling and designing. As you complete each project at your own pace, you'll develop the skills to qualify you as a jeweler.

When you graduate from Gem City College School of Horology, you'll understand and appreciate the skills of a jeweler. What's more, you will have those abilities and do them well. There are always more positions than there are qualified craftsmen to fill them - positions in watch repair, clock repair, jewelry repair, engraving, and store management. Whether you work for a jewelry manufacturer, an established jewelry store, or become self-employed, you'll have the satisfaction of having a career you truly enjoy...one that is highly respected and financially rewarding.

Gem City College has provided Cosmetology Training since purchasing the Quincy Beauty Academy in 1975. It features a large clinic for customers, dispensary, classrooms, and the appropriate atmosphere for the learning and practice of Cosmetology. Students will learn skills in haircutting, nails, perming, color, salon management, and other areas. The demand for stylists exceeds the number of graduates available. The program requires 1500 clock hours or 75 Quarter hours of credit to complete. As you begin your study remember that we believe the students can achieve great heights in this environment, if you are willing to learn and practice that which you are about to be taught. We believe you can succeed, and we will be there to provide you with the education and encouragement you'll need to get there. Many job opportunities await the successful graduate (hairstylist, salon owner or manager, color specialist, teacher, or sales person).

Additional Information

Our Home Study Division offers an alternative for those who cannot relocate to Quincy. Because this division is not included in our national accreditation, students are not eligible for any federal financial assistance or student loans.

These home study programs emphasize practical skills. A step-by-step training method is utilized in which projects are assigned to the student in an order of advancing difficulty. The skills learned in early lessons are applied in later projects. Students gain a working knowledge of the subject since they are truly learning by doing.

Each lesson in the home study program is made up of text material, a self-check test and a practical job assignment. When students have completed a job assignment, they return it to the school for correction, evaluation, and comments by the instructor. Thus, the instructor can spot both strengths and areas in which more work is needed while the student progresses through the training. Instructors will suggest ways for the student to overcome difficulties and answer any questions about the work. Students receive careful, personal attention from their instructor. The classroom teaching experience of the instructors makes them well acquainted with the types of problems commonly encountered by beginning students. Also they have had experience working in their own jewelry and watch repair businesses, so they know the practical problems which face professional jewelers.

Qualifications

Students of clock repairing, watch repairing, engraving, or diamond setting should be able to work with their hands and should have the ability to understand and follow directions. They also should have good eyesight (with or without glasses). However, the most important qualifications are the desire to produce fine workmanship, the ability to stick with projects until they have been perfected, and the desire to do the work well. Individuals who devote themselves to the work will find it to be interesting and rewarding.

Tools and Supplies

The tools and supplies required by each home study course may be obtained from the school. Lists of such equipment will be sent along with the catalog. Prices charged are the standard for the same quality tools as may be purchased from any tool supplier. Students are not required to purchase their tools from the school. However, it is recommended that certain items be obtained here as these have been prepaired especially for use in our courses. Tools and supplies may be purchased as they are required and need not all be purchased at the start of the training program.
