Who Am I?
My name is Jonathan Gennick, and I make my living as a computer-book editor and writer. I specialize in Oracle, am certified in Oracle7, Oracle8, Oracle8i, and Oracle9i, and am in the enviable position of working for my favorite publisher—O'Reilly Media. For my day-job, I edit mostly UML, database, C++, and Python titles for O'Reilly. When I'm not editing, I can often be found writing, whether for one of my own books, for Oracle Magazine, for my Michigan Waterfalls web site, for my Oracle-article list, for the O'Reilly Network, or for this site.
Where Am I?
I live with my wife, daughter, and son in the delightful City of Munising, Michigan. I work out of an office in the basement of my house, which makes me a fulltime telecommuter. Munising is in Michigan's Upper Penninsula, and is fairly far north. At one time, I thought I represented O'Reilly Media's northernmost nexus in the Western Hemisphere. It turns out however, that our Canadian Sales Manager at that time had me beat by a wide margin. If you like, you can read about why I chose to live in Munising.
Telecommuting has been good for me. I'm naturally somewhat introverted, so I don't miss the social aspects of office-life all that much. I've the biggest office I've ever had, and I love being able to walk six blocks to the lake in the summers to have a quick, picnic lunch with my kids. The authors I work with are all over the world, so there's no advantage to be gained by my being in parked in an office building. Much credit goes to my wife. She's home all day, takes care of the kids when they are off from school, and pretty much insulates me from everything else that goes on around the house during the workday.
