I am a consultant general surgeon with a specialist interest in vascular surgery. I specialise in all aspects of arterial and venous surgery. I also have an interest in laparoscopic surgery (gallbladders, groin hernias and appendicectomy), hernia repair (inguinal, femoral, incisional), basic paediatric surgery and endocrine surgery (thyroid and parathyroid).
I went to Cambridge University (Emmanuel College) form 1982 - 1985 to study pre-clinical medicine. I completed my medical undergraduate training at Oxford University (Magdalen College) from 1985 - 1988.
I moved back to Birmingham in 1988 and all of my subsequent training was based in the West Midlands. After my House Jobs I taught Anatomy at the University of Birmingham for a year. At the end of this year I passed my FRCS part 1 examination and entered a Senior House Office rotation. In 1992 I passed the FRCS part 2. I became a Registrar immediately after this and carried out research for 18 months at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The subject of my MD thesis was 'Ischaemia-reperfusion injury in intermittent claudication'. This studied the possible harmful effect of walking in patients with arterial disease of their legs (causing a tightness in the calf after a certain distance).
