History of Gjenvick

Paul initially set out to make a family genealogy site around Gjenvick and Gjønvik however it quickly grew into something bigger where historians, librarians, students, enthusiasts, families from all around the world started consulting his website to rediscover information.

Primarily and foremost it provides a vast collection of passenger lists – souvenirs of voyages that brought immigrants and socialites across the ocean from the 1880s through the 1950s. The Archives have assisted movie production companies, authors and historians with high-resolution images and additional information.

Why the name Gjenvick-Gjønvik Archives

The founder of the Archives, Paul Ament-Gjenvick, originally named the archives "The Gjenvick-Gjønvik Family History Center" and included the family history of the Gjenvick's in the United States and Gjønvik in Scandinavia. Gjenvick is the original but incorrect translation of Gjønvik - a unique Norwegian name that first appeared in the late 1800s.

In 2003, the name was shortened to the "Gjenvick-Gjønvik Archives" to represent the family that started the archives. The family history section pertaining to the Gjenvick-Gjønvik family has since been removed and is currently being researched by various family members in Upper Midwestern US. The actual documents that comprise the Gjenvick-Gjønvik Archives are kept in archival safe, controlled environmental storage in locations around the United States (Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Seattle and Atlanta) and in Trondheim, Norway.
