The word domain is used in a number of different ways when it comes to the Internet. It can be used to refer to:

  • A website's domain name. Examples: Apple.com or AboutUs.org or PDX.edu.
  • A website. When someone uses the word domain to refer to a website, they're referring to the fact that its name is in effect its address. For the above examples, the actual websites would live at:
  • top-level domain. These are indicated by the letters that follow the dot in a domain name. Examples:
    • com
    • org
    • edu
    • biz
    • info
