The Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) is a neutral, strategic marine research and education institution, guided by a three-part mission:
Our programs represent a unique fusion of research and education that increase understanding of the complex interactions between the Gulf of Maine ecosystem and the human communities that depend on it. GMRI brings scientists, fishermen, and other marine stakeholders together as equal partners in marine ecosystem research stretching from Nova Scotia to Cape Cod and offshore 120 miles to Georges Bank . These projects involve more than 60 different fishing vessels and 45 scientists from 12 research institutions and are already contributing to more effective fishery management. We are currently recruiting a world class team of fishery scientists to increase our capacity to explore the oceanographic, biological, ecological, and economic factors that shape our dynamic marine ecosystem.
In addition to our growing research portfolio, GMRI’s education staff uses communications and computing technology in innovative ways to engage students, teachers, and families with locally relevant marine science. Our Vital Signs program uses handheld computing technology and standards-aligned learning activities to enable students to collect and share observations about their local aquatic ecosystems. Our website averages more than 18 million hits per year, reaches teachers and students in all 50 states and 140 countries, is consistently ranked at or near the top of Google search for such topics as Lobsters, Atlantic herring, Satellites, and Gulf of Maine. Through the new Sam L. Cohen Center for Interactive Learning we will provide 5th or 6th grade students from every community in Maine with free universal access to highly-interactive marine science education experience in a working research laboratory.
