The League was founded on February 14, 1920, by the suffragists who led the fight for voting rights for American women.

The League of Women Voters is a National, non-partisan organization established in 1920. Its primary purpose is to promote political responsibility through informed and active citizen participation in government. The League takes action on issues to influence public policy through education and advocacy; however, it never supports or opposes political candidates or parties.

The League has two separate and distinct roles. The League of Women Voters Citizen Education Fund which conducts our voters service and citizen education activities is a 501(c)(3) corporation, a nonprofit educational organization. The League of Women Voters of Charlotte-Mecklenburg, a membership organization, conducts action and advocacy on important issues.
