Goldman Sachs, founded in 1869, is one of the largest and most renowned investment banks in the world. Activities

Goldman Sachs’s business can be divided into three core business segments: investment banking; trading, asset management and securities services.

Goldman Sach’s investment banking has two divisions - Financial Advisory (investitures, mergers and acquisitions, restructuring and corporate defense activities); and Underwriting (private placements and public offerings of equity, debt instruments).

Acquisitions and Merger

In the field of acquisitions and mergers, it became famous for advising its clients on ways to avoid hostile takeovers. In the 1980s, Goldman Sachs was the sole investment bank of its stature which had a well defined policy against helping companies makes hostile takeovers, and this increased their reputation greatly. This segment makes up about 15% of the Company’s revenues.

Goldman Sach’s largest segment and its profit center is Trading and Principal Investments. This segment is further divided into Fixed Income, Currency & Commodities, Equities and Principal Investments (funds and merchant banking investments).

Trading done by Goldman Sachs is not speculative; rather, it attempts to profit from the bid-ask scene during the process of its role as market maker. It derives about 65% of its profits and revenues from this segment.

As Goldman Sachs gains market share, Asset Management and Securities Services is a fast growing area of business. This is further separated into two divisions: Asset Management, which provides very affluent individuals and large institutions with investment advisory, management of mutual funds, financial planning services, and what are known as alternative investments - real estate funds, hedge funds, private equity funds.
