Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company is the third largest tire company in the world after Bridgestone and Michelin. Founded in 1898, the company evolved and ultimately became the giant we know today through a long list of innovations and adaptations. Goodyear has grown to a company with net sales of around 20 billion dollars annually and with a firm spot in the elitist Fortune 500 list.

The Website

Goodyear.com features a very clean design and strict adherence to the corporate style commonplace now. It clearly distinguishes between its US consumers, its worldwide market and the strictly corporate relationship with its investors and its potential employees. The main page serves as a gateway to these 3 separate segments and thus the navigation of the site is extremely easy. All throughout the website a brand conscious image can be observed. Beginning with the extensive usage of corporate symbols as well as a very extensive history section, this company is obviously holding its values and tradition to a high place.

Corporate History

The company was founded in 1898 by Frank Seiberling. Goodyear is in fact a honorific name. Charles Goodyear was the inventor of vulcanized rubber, in 1983. The first tires that Goodyear produced were a great success, they soon became very popular because they were easily detachable and easy to maintain. But the item which brought the company to glory was its Goodyear blimp, nowadays one of the most famous advertising icons in America.

Goodyear started as a small business, a factory opened in Akron Ohio, specialized in production of bicycle and carriage tires or poker chips. The company was propelled by the advent of the automobile. Since 1901, when owner Seiberling provided Henry Ford with racing tires, to 1911 when started experimenting airship design the Goodyear developed the largest rubber company in the world. Between 1926-1990 Goodyear become a multinational corporation. They registered spectacular earnings: by 1985 company’s total income was 10 billion dollars.

This period though, ended sharply after the company went through a hostile type of takeover, called greenmailing, in 1987. The company survived, but soon afterwards, a major restructuring effort ensued which would ultimately bring the company to the shape we are familiar with today. This restructuring effort saw the company in a continued quest for efficiency with all the perks and downside associated with it. A wild dance of opening new factories and closing old ones is what ultimately proved the right approach in securing the impressive income that the company enjoys today.

Impact On Popular Culture

Goodyear enjoys a very wide brand recognition, but this phenomenon is mostly happening in US. The Goodyear blimp, the most recognizable corporate symbol of the company is still used today and overall the general impact of the company is deemed as mostly positive in the minds of many Americans. This view however saw its occasional downfall as Goodyear was accused in many parts of the world as being an exponent of the so called “American colonialism” through its numerous rubber plantations in such countries like Indonesia or Philippines. Also the occasional large reduction of personnel and even closing of some plants caused some resentment in the local communities affected.
