Gray & Holt Dry Goods, Inc. is located in downtown Athens, Alabama on the north side of the Courthouse Square, in the old "Dixie Theatre" building. It was established by E. T. "Doc" Gray and Ollie Holt in 1934. Although ownership has changed, it has been in continuous operation since that time, and is one of the oldest businesses in Athens. The decor and fixtures have basically remained the same over the years. All the wood and glass showcases are original along with a 1925 National hand crank cash register that we use every day and have for over 60 years. The interior has been decorated with a mixture of original advertising, such as antique signs, and clocks that represent the brands that we sell, and original Silent Movie Posters that were discovered in the attic several years ago. There are also many other antique and nostalgic items that are displayed in the store.
U. G. White Hardware Co. has been in business in Athens since 1917. It moved to its present location, 101 North Jefferson Street, in 1937 and has been in operation "On the Square" ever since. The business was owned and operated by its founder, U. G. White, until his death in 1952. It is now owned and operated by his great-grandson. U. G. White Hardware has resisted change in many ways---from the old sales counter and display cases to the 1924 cash register which was purchased new by the founder and has been used every day since. Even the old wooden floors and balcony remain as they were originally. Today, U. G. White Hardware carries a wide variety of hardware, gifts, cookware, cutlery, and can proudly proclaim "If we don't have it, you don't need it". U. G. White Hardware offers not only a wide variety of merchandise, but has retained its one-on-one service and a sense of tradition.
