Greater Milwaukee Foundation
Description edit
A different way to make a difference
The Greater Milwaukee Foundation helps people establish permanent charitable funds that serve people throughout Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee and Washington counties and beyond. Because donors name each fund and choose the causes it serves, they enjoy the individuality of a private foundation. Because these funds are united under one organizational roof, they gain the superior cost effectiveness and tax benefits of a large public charity.
How a charitable fund works
Within the Foundation are more than 920 charitable funds ranging in size from $10,000 to more than $20 million. Each works in basically the same way. When donors create a charitable fund, they give it its name and purpose. The Foundation invests these funds in one of five investment pools. Every year, a portion of each fund is then used to make charitable grants in accordance with the donor's intentions. See Foundation funds for a listing of all individual funds within the Foundation.
Choosing grant recipients
Many donors recommend grant recipients annually from their funds. Others have designated certain agencies to receive grants from their funds permanently. About half of the funds within the Foundation have been designated by their donors to support broad field of interests, such as children, the arts, etc. The Foundation chooses grant recipients for these funds through a competitive proposal process. See grant guidelines for information on how grant recipients are chosen.
