Description

In 1984 the fiery parliamentarian and champion of the West German Greens, Petra Kelly, made her second visit to Australia. She urged that the various Greens in Australia develop a national identity. Partly as a result of this, just after Christmas of the same year, 50 Greens activists gathered in Tasmania to organise a national conference.

The Australian Greens is part of the Global Greens network, with around 70 Greens parties established world-wide. In 23 nations Greens have been elected to public office, and in European countries such as Germany, Latvia and France, Greens parties are part of governing coalitions. The Australian Greens has a Constitution and Charter (updated Nov '04; PDF - 114KB) which sets out the principles and philosophy of the Greens. The Bylaws (updated Nov '05; PDF - 95KB) of the Australian Greens are also available.
