Description
History of Guy's and St Thomas' Charity
Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity can trace its roots back to the founding of St Thomas’ Hospital in the infirmary of the priory of St Mary Overy in the early part of the twelfth century. The hospital provided help for sick people, for those who were elderly and destitute, and gave hospitality to poor travellers.
Towards the end of thirteenth century, the infirmary was named after St Thomas à Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, who was canonised in 1273 shortly after his death.
In 1348 during the Black Death, which wiped out one third of the population of Europe, a licence was granted to St Thomas’ to beg for alms.
