Sam and Mary Middleton founded Gunston School in 1911 at their home along the Corsica River. The school population grew over time and the decision was made during World War II to focus on educating girls in a residential setting. In 1952 it was incorporated as a non-profit organization and was accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools as well as the Association of Independent Maryland Schools.
In the winter of 1996 Gunston's Board of Trustees decided to undergo a change in mission from being a single-sex boarding to a coeducational day school. Now in its seventh year as a regional college preparatory school, Gunston serves 136 students from Anne Arundel, Kent, Queen Anne's, Talbot, Caroline and Kent County in Delaware.
